Why a Web site?
The current national estimate of the worth of a volunteer’s time is $19.51 an hour. Hancock County nonprofits use hundreds of volunteers every year. Although it is impossible to do an exact calculation, it is safe to say volunteers in Hancock County provide tens of thousands of dollars worth of volunteer time every year. In addition to providing a valuable service, volunteers also experience self-satisfaction and pride in their community, as well as gaining knowledge of problems and issues that need solving. An updated volunteer match web site, promoted heavily to businesses, churches, youth, and other potential volunteer groups, will allow potential volunteers to more easily and quickly find the perfect opportunity to suit their needs. The nonprofit community also will benefit greatly by having an updated avenue to find volunteers for their many projects, which will enhance their ability to serve the community.
How did Volunteer Hancock County get started?
Volunteer Hancock County was created in 2003 by a group of volunteers enrolled in a Leadership Hancock County class. Eleven class members joined together to do a required community service project. After much discussion about the need for more volunteers in the community, the group put words into action and Volunteer Hancock County was born. The creators were Amber Baker, Brandee Bastin, David Beal, Janice Cassell, Jodi Gilman, Paula Jarrett, Stephanie Jones, Carolyn and David Muegge, Don Pearson and James Roberts, with technical support from TLH Solutions.
